Innovia Films is launching what it says is the world’s first carbon-neutral BOPP label film – Encore C45cn.

The company hopes that its new product will contribute to the reduction of carbon footprints and accelerate the shift away from the use of fossil resources.

Encore 45cn, which joins Innovia's Encore line of recyclable BOPP films, is carbon neutral on a mass balance and cradle to gate basis as certified by the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC Plus) program.

Stephen Weber, key account director of labels at Innovia Films, says: "In addition to being carbon neutral, Encore C45cn is a high MD stiffness 45um BOPP bubble film for automatic label dispensing performance. This could allow the replacement of standard 50um films, giving a further 10% material saving."

One of the leading voices in the push for carbon reduction in the packaging industry, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, says: “Achieving the 2030 UN Sustainable Development Goals and Paris Agreement climate targets will hinge upon the global transition to a low-carbon circular economy”.

In line with this, major brand owners are making commitments to move towards net-zero emissions and, as a part of this, many will want to communicate the carbon footprint of each product. Innovia says that the availability of a carbon-neutral film to lower the labels’ carbon footprint is one step to help towards this net-zero emissions goal.    

Mondi has worked with Kao’s hair cosmetic brand Goldwell on a lightweight, mono-material stand-up pouch that reportedly offers an 80% reduction in plastic compared to the previous rigid packaging solution.

India’s Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has announced that from the 1st of July 2022, the country will ban the manufacture, import, stocking, distribution, sale, and use of select single-use plastics, including cutlery, straws, carrier bags, and trays, that it claims have “low utility and high littering potential”.
