AVON, Ohio — A northeast Ohio community is, in some literal ways, sticking together June 17-18.

The Avon Heritage Duck Tape Festival returned in person for the first time in three years. Avon is home of the world headquarters for Duck Tape brand.

Thursday afternoon, Owen Pierce taped together a wallet with his mom Laura’s help, because the tape can be tricky.

“Because you have the stickiness, but after you get used to it, it gets pretty easy,” he said.

The sticky stuff was no match for his older sister, Emma.

“Patience and knowing if you mess up, you can still keep going,” she said. “And it won’t really look as bad. Like, if you keep going instead of restarting, then it will definitely help.”

Making duct tape flowers is her specialty.

“I put them around my room and decorate my room, or I give them to my teachers and stuff,” she said.

The kids shared their skills at the Avon Heritage Duck Tape Festival and following in their mom’s footsteps.

“Seeing them get to enjoy a passion that I have as well, and watching them get creative with the tape is just, it makes me excited,” she said.

Laura Pierce is the director of marketing and communications for Shurtape Technologies, which oversees the Duck Tape brand.

The family-friendly festival brings creativity to life through 13 larger-than-life displays sculpted by Art Academy of Cincinnati students using the adhesive.

“It brings the family together,” said Emma.

The event also gives families like the Pierces a chance to hone their own crafts.

“There’s no right or wrong way with this product,” Laura said. “You can just have a lot of fun. Literally can use your imagination and come up with endless uses.”

The festival goes through Saturday, June 18, outside Mercy Health Stadium.
